Day Trip From Hong Kong Island to Lantau Island
Do you have some time to explore Hong Kong but to avoid the concrete jungle of Hong Kong Island? Just step on the convenient MTR and reach Tung Chung Station and take the Ngong Ping 360, a gondola lift that connects you to Lantau Island and explore some cultural significance and the still intact fishing village of Tai O. When you’re done, why not do some shopping as well, just visit the Citygate Outlets at Tung Chung Station.
Lantau Island is located in south west region of Hong Kong with the size being nearly twice the size of Hong Kong Island; but consists mainly of mountainous terrain. The island features many tourist attractions. For the best view of the green hills and the sea, visit Wisdom Path.
Among them is the Tian Tan Buddha with Lantau Peak in background- 85 foot (26m) high bronze Tian Tan Bhudda, once the world’s largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statue. On the way there is a cultural themed village with stilt houses (pang uk) in Tai O, famous for its fishing village scenery. Often called the “Venice of Hong Kong”, Tai O is a quaint fishing village with lots of simple houses built on stilts over the creek. To get the most from your visit, just wander the narrow alleyways and observe a way of life far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern-day Hong Kong. Traditional Chinese food and salted fish can be found here along with locally produced shrimp paste.
One of the best ways to get there is via the Ngong Ping 360, a gondola lift operated by the MTR opened in 2006 providing a 5.7km, 20minute gondola ride between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping. Later innovations included glass-floored gondolas offering 360 degree views of the island. Other ways include minibus if you’re afraid of heights, but be warned, if you do have a tendency to have motion sickness, it also might not be the best idea. On your way back to Tung Chung MTR Station, feel free to stop by the Citygate Outlets – Hong Kong’s only outlet mall for some shopping. To travel from Tai O to Citygate Outlets, take Bus number 11.
