A Taste of Portugal in Macau

Macau is a former Portuguese colony from the mid-16th century to 1999, and is now one of two special administrative regions of the People’s Republic of China and is most known for its tourism and gambling at their numerous casinos and resorts (Wynn, Sands, MGM, Galaxy, and the Venetian) spread between the Cotai Strip- similar to the Las Vegas’ Strip which is located in the Taipa region and the peninsula of Macau where the rest are located along with Old Macau. Today, Macau is the Las Vegas of Asia, with gambling revenue surpassing that of Las Vegas.

Three times I have visited: 2007, 2011 and most recently May 2014. Each time we’d take the ferry from Hong Kong which takes approximately one hour from Central or Kowloon. In 2007, it was only a day trip; in 2011, we stayed in the Venetian Macau for one night; in 2014, we stayed in the Sheraton Cotai for one night. Back in 2011, I got to enjoy the Cirque du Soleil show called ZAIA; “the most dazzling spectacle ever in Asia”. Then in 2014, I got to enjoy the House of Dancing Water; “a creative masterpiece blending the best of the best entertainment elements from both East and West.” Their concerts, and entertainment venues rivals those of Las Vegas.
